October is an awkward month. It's too late to start anything big and too early to write the year off. But there's a specific category of work that fits the gap exactly: small, finishable fixes that make January easier. Here is one from each of the five domains we assess.
Deliver: write down the thing you explain most often
There is one process in your business you have explained out loud more than any other. Onboarding a client, closing out a job, handling a particular kind of request. Write it down. One page, plain language, no template required. You will use it in January the first time somebody asks.
Demand: make a list of who you haven't heard from
Pull the clients or customers you have not spoken to in 90 days. That is the whole exercise, just the list. Most businesses find two or three names on it they assumed were still active. Finding that out in October is considerably better than finding it out in March.
Resource: get the books current before tax season, not during
If your books are more than a month behind, the gap compounds quietly. Closing out October and November on time costs a few hours. Closing out an entire year in February costs a weekend and usually some accuracy.
Protect: check your insurance limits against this year's revenue
Not whether you have coverage. Whether the limits still fit. Most underinsurance is not a missing policy, it is a policy sized for a smaller version of the business. Revenue grew and the coverage stayed where it was. Renewal season is the natural moment to look.
Direct: decide what next year is for
One sentence, not a plan and not a deck. If you cannot finish "next year is the year we..." then January will get decided by whatever lands in your inbox first.
None of these take a week. Together they take less time than the January scramble they prevent. If you would rather have someone work through all five properly, that is what our Strategic Optimization engagement is for. Book a consultation and we will start with whichever one is costing you the most.
